In remembrance of Lola Almudévar

Lola Stoppleman de Almudévar was a freelance journalist working in Bolivia when she was killed in a car accident in 2007. The Schwarzkopf Foundation wishes to remember Lola who was awarded “Young European of the Year” in 1999 and share some of her journalistic work.

Lola Almudévar was the daughter of Monica Stoppleman and Mariano Almudévar. Lola died at the age of 29 in a road accident in November 2007 while working as a journalist in Bolivia. Young, passionate about Bolivia and full of enthusiasm for the region, her death was described by the BBC as “a loss to Latin American journalism”. Earlier in the year she had left her senior broadcast journalist job at BBC Midlands to report from South America as a freelance, filing stories for a number of newspapers including The Guardian, the San Francisco Chronicle and the Jewish Chronicle.

Lola was a vivid and talented person who, after being appointed Young European of the Year by the Schwarzkopf Foundation and spending some time at the European Parliament, joined the BBC as a radio journalist trainee. She progressed swiftly at the BBC and was a producer/director at BBC Birmingham when she decided to take some time out to travel in South America, where her good command of Spanish would be a virtue. She arrived in Bolivia early in 2007, and began to research and file news and features for the BBC and other media, including several pieces for From Our Own Correspondent.

Posthumously the BBC World Service awarded her Programme Maker of the Year 2007.

“Still today we are inspired by Lola Almudévar. She was a courageous young journalist, who brought us many important stories from the perspective of ordinary people. Here at the Schwarzkopf Foundation we are proud to call her our Young European of the Year 1999. We miss her a lot”, says André Schmitz-Schwarzkopf, the Chairman of the board of the Schwarzkopf Foundation.
